When a winch-out may be needed
A winch-out may help when a vehicle is stuck in mud, soft ground, gravel, a shallow ditch, a steep driveway edge, or another location where it cannot regain traction or safely return to the road. Off-road recovery depends heavily on access, distance from a stable surface, terrain, obstacles, and vehicle condition.
Describe the recovery area
- Exact location or map pin
- Vehicle year, make, model, and approximate position
- Surface conditions such as mud, sand, grass, gravel, or pavement
- Slope, ditch depth, water, curbs, fences, trees, or other obstacles
- Distance from a stable accessible surface
- Whether wheels turn and the vehicle can steer or brake
- Visible damage, leaks, or collision involvement
Do not make the situation worse
Continued wheel spinning can dig the vehicle deeper or damage the surface. Do not attach improvised chains or stand near a tensioned cable. Wait in a safe location and follow the operator’s instructions.
Recovery availability depends on safe access
Not every off-road position can be reached or recovered with the same equipment. Dispatch must evaluate the terrain, vehicle, distance, and hazards. Photos can help explain the situation but do not replace an on-site safety assessment.
