When drivers request lockout help
A lockout can happen when keys are left inside, the trunk closes with keys in it, or access is lost while the vehicle is parked. Vehicle design and lock systems vary, so dispatch needs the exact year, make, and model before confirming service.
What to tell dispatch
- Exact vehicle location
- Year, make, model, and color
- Where the keys are believed to be
- Whether doors or trunk are locked
- Whether the vehicle is running
- Any child, pet, medical, heat, traffic, or safety concern
- How you can demonstrate permission to access the vehicle
Emergency situations require emergency help
If a child, vulnerable person, or pet is locked inside—especially in heat—or there is immediate danger, call 911 first. A towing-company arrival estimate should never replace emergency response.
Authorization protects vehicle owners
Be prepared to show identification and ownership or permission when appropriate. Requirements can depend on the vehicle and situation, so confirm what is needed by phone.
